Grove Park
History
Grove Park was named Edwin Wiley Grove, a pharmaceutical tycoon, who also also built Atkins Park in the Virginia-Highlands area and Grove Park Inn in North Carolina. In the 20s and 30s his Grove Park Development company was the primary developer of the neighborhood and he named several of the streets after his family members. Some notable streets were named after his wife Gertrude, daughter Evelyn, son Edwin, and several others named after his grandkids. Many of the homes in the area include frame cottages, brick tudors, and single level ranch style houses. The neighborhood was an all white community but during the 60s and 70s the expansion of the suburbs caused “white-flight” and the area became more diverse as African-Americans moved in.

As the edge of the neighborhood is Maddox park featuring a playground, 2 basketball courts, tennis court, and swimming pool. Soon westside park will be complete and is expected to be the largest park in Atlanta, this should transform the area to be more of an outdoor walkable community!
